Sophie and Jess, two fantastic nurses from Ward 33, are getting ready to put on their hiking boots and backpacks for Bright Red!
The daring duo are taking on the mighty Helvellyn in the Lake District next Friday – which is the third highest peak in England. They’ll be walking the famous Striding Edge route, which boasts both fearsome drops and fantastic views.
They decided to tackle a mountain climb as it is something that neither of them have done before, and they think it’s going to be an amazing challenge:
‘We’re nervous at the thought of climbing Helvellyn, but we’re excited at the same time…apparently there are amazing views once you’re at the top!’
As staff nurses working on Ward 33 at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle, Sophie and Jess work hard to support patients who are undergoing gruelling treatments such as intensive chemotherapy and stem cell transplants for blood cancers.
‘We see first hand what patients and their families go through. We came up with the idea of raising money as a way of giving back to the charity that supports and helps fund treatments for our patients.’
Although they have been preparing with plenty of walks, they say that on the day they think it will be the support and encouragement from each other that gets them to the top!
Incredibly, Sophie and Jess have already smashed their initial fundraising target, and are keen to continue raising as much money for Bright Red as they can.
They say it’d be a fantastic achievement to be able to make a huge donation to Bright Red, and also to reach the peak of the mountain – as they’re both scared of heights!
