My journey with the blood cancer team at the Freeman Hospital began in March 2013 when I was first diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia. This came completely out of the blue as I was to all intents and purposes a fit and active 53yr old.
I spent the next few months in and out of ward 33 receiving chemotherapy and happily went into remission later that year. It was during this time that I first became aware of Bright Red and the amazing work they do to support the blood cancer unit, patients and their families through their fundraising and donations. Unfortunately I relapsed in 2016 and had a stem cell transplant from my son in January 2017.
I spent the next 3 months in a special isolation room on Ward 33 which had been completely refurbished and equipped from charitable donations from Bright Red . Part of my care during and after treatment was delivered by a fantastic specialist nurse who was funded by Bright Red. Thankfully I made a full recovery and I am still in complete remission thanks to the amazing hard work, professionalism and dedication of the entire blood cancer team who are able to carry on with their incredible service due in no small part to the ongoing support of Bright Red.
I owe my life to these people and this is why it is so important to me and my family to be an ambassador for Bright Red and everything that they do.
