Grace will be having her long hair chopped short on the 22nd of May, and she’s asking people to donate what they can to the charity.
She was motivated to raise money by her auntie, Michelle, and her neighbour, Laura, who were both diagnosed with Leukaemia in 2020. Michelle underwent treatment at Newcastle’s Freeman Hospital, where she was given a bone marrow transplant. Laura, who was diagnosed with the disease in December, was separated from her three young children over Christmas. She has also received a bone marrow transplant, and they are both recovering well.
After hearing about their experiences, and learning more about blood cancer, Grace became determined to do her bit to help Bright Red support patients, like Michelle and Laura, and their families.
“Last year my Auntie Michelle was diagnosed with leukaemia and thanks to treatments, her strength, bravery and determination she has beaten cancer for the second time in her life. She is a true inspiration and I want to raise money for Bright Red to help as many people as possible find a cure for blood cancer. My neighbour Laura was also diagnosed with leukaemia last year and has also faced her fight with such courage. So for my Auntie Michelle and Laura I will have my hair cut short and donate it to the Little Princess Trust to make a wig for children with cancer. ”
Grace has already passed her original fundraising goal of £150, and she’s hoping to raise even more money for Bright Red when she has her hair cut. She’s also planning on donating her chopped off strands to be made into wigs for those who’ve lost their hair during treatment.
Like all young girls, Grace’s hair has always been important to her. Grace’s mum, Helen, says that while Grace has always had long hair and is nervous about the change, she’s excited to help make a difference.
On behalf of everybody at Bright Red we’re super excited to see Grace’s new hair cut and we’re truly thankful for the money she’s raised in donations for the big chop. Grace, you’re amazing!
